I would not expect it to be taken out. They aren't in the habit of removing things in order to maintain backward compatibility. Look how long they kept threatening to desupport local structure declarations in user objects. When they do desupport things, its usually on a much larger scale because of some technology they can/will no longer support.
Use it if you have to, refactor it when it finally (if ever) gets desupported.
